Song of the Week: “Short and Sweet” by Brittany Howard

Brittany Howard, the singer, songwriter and band leader of Alabama Shakes, has reached great success this year, and rightly so. Early in the year she appeared at the Grammys, where she won a grammy for best rock song with her track titled “stay high” from the album Jamie. Howard was nominated for six awards across a range of categories that emphasize just how excellent Jaime is. Within that album is the track “Short and Sweet,” which is a quiet spot on the album, where Howard reflects poignantly on the passage of time and the damage it can do to a relationship that’s been interrupted. Here she writes and sings soulfully lyrics like:

There are miles between us

Time between us

There is something between us

I may be a fool to dream of you

But, God, it feels so good to dream at all

Something short and sweet

There’s always a light over my head for you

I am waiting, I am waiting

Time will always try to kill me
