Song of The Week: “Prism” by Say She She

The female-led discodelic soul band Say She She release their debut album Prism on Karma Chief Records. Named as a silent nod to Nile Rodgers, Say She She (C’est chi-chi!: It’s Chic!”) will transport you with their dreamy harmonies, catchy hooks, and up-tempo grooves. The New York trio comprised of Piya Malik (staple El Michels Affair feature, and former backing singer for Chicano Batman), Sabrina Mileo Cunningham, and Nya Gazelle Brown — have released “Prism,” the lead single and title track of the group’s debut album.

“Prism” is a glittery and silky ballad centered around glistening keys, a supple bass line and metronomic-like drumming paired with the trio’s lush harmonies. The end result is a hook-driven song that sonically nods 70s girl groups, psych-pop and psych soul, and sounds like it could have been released in 1968, 1978, or — well, today. Say She She’s female harmonies paired with funky, disco-inspired arrangements played by a backing band featuring some of New York’s most talented and accomplished players, featuring former members of Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaries, Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, The Shacks, and others. Locally, they’ve developed a reputation as a must-see live act, playing sold-out shows at Bowery Ballroom, Nublu 151, Brooklyn Bazaar, and many other venues. If you’re in the Brooklynn area or are planning a trip, be sure to follow Say She She to catch their current performance schedule and see if you can snag yourself some tickets to take in all the sparkling-funk-energy firsthand.
