Song of the Week: “midnight sun” by Nilüfer Yanya

From her latest album, Painless, Nilüfer Yanya once again delivers perfection. With her song, “midnight sun,” she starts her melody slowly and then unfolds and builds it into a passionate song with soft immaculate textures, and painful lyrics. Time can’t won’t heal all wounds, especially ones you choose to examine closely over and over again. This is exactly what Yanya shows us in Painless.

The London songwriter lingers in feelings of longing, rejection, heartache and instead of pushing them away, she shows us how to pull them in closer. “Don’t like whenever I’m not in pain/Peeling back, not noticing/The blood and bones beneath my skin,” she sings on “midnight sun,”  about doing this harm to herself or inviting whoever hurt her to go ahead and keep at it. This might not sound like the best way to get over a broken heart, but it sure will allow you to feel seen if you’ve ever experienced that crushing heart ache yourself.
