Song of The Week: “MESS U MADE” by MICHELLE

Born-and-bred New Yorkers, MICHELLE formed in 2018. This musical collective is a predominately queer and POC sextet. MICHELLE succeeds in blending their various styles and sounds into one beautiful arrangement of music. “MESS U MADE,” is an indie-inspired R&B jam that expertly harmonizes and weaves vocals from each of the group’s four leading singers: Sofia D’Angelo, Emma Lee, Layla Ku and Jamee Lockard.

The hallmarks of MICHELLE’s music can be found in their layered vocal harmonies, analog synthesizers, vibrant percussion, and smoldering hooks create a sonic soundscape. With the four vocalists pushing the boundaries of their singing talents, Charlie Kilgore and Julian Kaufman finish the product off with some fine tuning in the production department. Despite all the tinkering, it is important to note that the vocals remain largely untouched and appear in their organic state, which is a welcome and beautiful reprieve.

This raw and heartfelt track is paired with a music video, shot and recorded live by Justin Ongeri, where the viewer experiences the collective group jam session, moments of screaming and living room dancing. Sure to resonate with most listeners, if you take the time to watch some of their live performances of this track, the screaming on stage can be almost feral and feels exhilarating in all the right places.
