All of my projects start with a playlist. Sometimes the lyrics match the themes or events in the story, sometimes the song’s sound matches the vibe of the project. I use book playlists to help me get into the mood of the story and jump start my writing.
For A Lot Like Adiós, I crafted a playlist that captured Michelle and Gabe’s chemistry and tangled history, and spoke to their complicated relationship. I also wanted songs that evoked their longing, loneliness, and fire. The entire playlist is almost seven hours long, so it was hard to select just ten songs to highlight, but this list should give a good sense of the range.
“Ruin the Friendship” perfectly conveys the friends to lovers trope. “Sway” helped me get in the mood to start the book, and I added a lot of Luis Fonsi’s songs to this playlist. “Vulnerable,” “SOLO,” and “You Don’t Even Know Me” matched the characters’ inner feelings, and “If the World Was Ending” vibed with their longing and unspoken feelings. “Wild” and “Movement” were all about their chemistry, “Yo Perreo Sola” is specific to a line in the book, and “Adios” was added because of the book title!
