Graphic novels have revolutionized the comic book medium, introducing themes and characters that traditional comic publishing never tackled.
A Singular Focus
Limerence Press, an imprint of Oni Press, was founded in 2016 as a publishing house focused on sex education comics and quality erotica where comic readers could find positive portrayals of sexuality.
Oni’s managing editor Ari Yarwood was inspired by the likes of Spike Trotman’s Iron Circus Comics and wanted to create an imprint that would focus on body positive books with diverse characters that address the various emotional and intimate experiences involved in love and romantic relationships.
“My goal is to publish books that dispel myths and shame, that let the reader feel comfortable with their own personal sexuality, and that prioritize consent and communication,” Yarwood told The MNT. “Books we thought were important and needed, that focused on inclusivity and positivity in sexuality.”
Some Books To Read
Oh Joy Sex Toy, Volume One: a comic book manual from wife and husband cartoonist team Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan, launched the imprint. The Portland-based team, whose work has also been published by Dark Horse, Image, Villard and Scholastic, collected their weekly webcomic in four total volumes.
Drawn to Sex: The Basics: a clear and concise sex education manual that specializes in “judgment-free education.”
Open Earth: A graphic novel about a polyamorous relationship. In space! Check out our R11 article about the book as well.
Meet The Publisher
Creating Limerace Press was not a huge leap for Oni Press.
The Portland-based publisher has been publishing comic books and graphic novels for 20 years, and the group has always been progressive in their approach.
Founded by Bob Schreck and Joe Nozemack in 1997 with the mission to make comics and graphic novels beyond the science fiction and superhero categories, the imprint has put out a variety of titles with non-traditional storylines.
