The Ripped Bodice, the “only exclusively romance brick-and-mortar bookstore on the west coast,” hosted the Great Big Romance Read throughout September, gathering readers from around the country to read the same book.
This year, the organizers chose The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite. The readers spanned online and offline book clubs around the country, gathering in bookstores, libraries, and private homes as well.
Los Angeles bookstore The Ripped Bodice launched the annual romance read in 2018, and picked this particular novel that tells the story of a brilliant unmarried woman who falls in love with a Countess as they work together to translate an astronomical text. Their love breaks social and sexual taboos in 19th Century England, the “Regency romance” setting of the novel.
