Love songs are usually thought of as songs between romantic partners, but the Hollywood, Florida-based rock group with Beach Day has written an ode to best friendships, fittingly titled “BFFs” from their August 2014 album Native Echoes. In this eminently catchy tune, the duo of Kimmy Drake on vocals and guitar and Skyler Black on drums wittily opine about the power of a best friend and the betrayal when a friend moves on and isn’t in the same friendship headspace as you are. In “BFFs,” the singer/narrator lists all the things she doesn’t want from a best friend, with a wistful croon that belies the lyrics, such as:
Forever’s just a word that we use where I’m from
Forever is just for the birds that I love
And if you wanna leave me out it’s okay
I’ll never put you in your place
’cause I’m better and I
Don’t wanna be your friend
Don’t wanna stay til the end
Don’t wanna be BFFs
Put on “BFFs” whenever you’re missing your own BFF and feel instantly better. Beach Day, whose latest track is spring 2023’s “If I Call Your Name,” has immortalized the joy and privilege of being a best friend.
