I’ve never been able to listen to music when I write. I need silence. The times I’ve tried listening to music while writing, the feelings of the songs always seemed to bleed through into the story and the last thing I’d want is to write cheerful words during a sad scene, or vice versa.
But one thing I do like to do after writing the book is find songs that fit into any of the many scenes, and those below fit the scenarios fairly well. I did the same for the Supernatural Singles Series, and there is no limit of magical-themed songs out there!
The Supernatural Singles Series follows a set of witchy triplet sisters, who even though shared a womb for months, couldn’t be any more different. In an alternate-reality modern-day New York City where supernaturals are all out in the open, these witches and their band of zany friends (including a virgin sex demon and a guardian angel who’s afraid of heights) navigate dating in the city and all its many pitfalls. There’s magic. There are hijinks. Toss in a saucy granny who knows things and it’s a good time for all.
NOT THE WITCH YOU WED
Not the Witch You Wed was my pandemic book, and to date, is the fastest book I’ve ever written. As a bedside nurse at the height of Covid, I needed an escape and I found it in developing this new series. Within these pages, I escaped with humor, snark, and every single magical pun that popped into my head.
In Not the Witch, you meet Violet, the oldest of the witchy triad, who for her entire life didn’t have magic. Not a single spark. As such, the role of Witch Prima (witch leader) that her grandmother now held, bypassed her and went to her younger sister Rose.
And then she bumped into her old teenage hearbreak…literally. And those magical sparks flew. Again…literally. This is a second-chance, fake-dating, plus size heroine romance with some good frenemies to lovers thrown in for good measure.
- “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” by the Police: This song written by Sting, is about a man smitten with a woman he feels is unattainable. In Not the Witch You Wed, Lincoln has always been enamored with Violet, but circumstances—and a secret history—also prevent him from expressing his true feelings and led to him breaking the heart of the one person he never meant to hurt.
- All the Magic by Natalie Imbruglia: Like in the song, Vi has rediscovered love and magic (with both Lincoln and within herself). It’s about magical healing that is already happening and which has yet TO happen. Vi & Linc realize that sometimes things happen for a reason, and when they’d been teens, they hadn’t yet been the right people for each other. They first needed to find themselves before they were ready to find each other.
NOT YOUR EX’S HEXES
In the second installment of the Supernatural Singles, Not Your Ex’s Hexes, Rose has stepped down as the Prima in training, and for the first time in her life, has the freedom to make choices. So what does a witch do? Have a one-night stand with a super hot, grumpy demon veterinarian…and try to save some abused horses. Too bad the horses had already been saved and by none other than the grumpy animal doctor, Damian.
Rose is sentenced to community service at the animal sanctuary which Damian runs, and it’s a fun story of one-night to forever, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, plus size heroine, and did I mention the friends with benefits horniness that goes awry?
- “In Your Eyes” by Sara Bareilles: This song makes an appearance in the story itself (although updated to the Bareilles version) when Damian makes a grand gesture worthy of the Say Anything 80s rom-com. Note: There is a boombox involved…and underwear, but that’s beside the point.
- “Witchy Woman” by the Eagles: “Witchy Woman” is Rose’s ringtone for Violet (she has one for everyone). It’s a bit of an inside joke since Violet had been without her magic for the first thirty-three years of her life and is now quickly making up for lost times.
- “Bark at the Moon” by Ozzy Osbourne: This ringtone is brought up in Not Your Ex’s Hexes‘ epilogue. Not to give away too many spoilers, but it’s Rose’s ringtone for a certain grouchy wolf shifter who has a tendency to bite first and ask questions later.
UPCOMING SUPERNATURAL SINGLES BOOK 3
I say upcoming because we haven’t released the title for Olive’s story yet, and you all are getting one of the very first sneaky peaks of songs that fit the story super well! This third installment follows the youngest of the Maxwell triplets, and by far, the most introverted as she’s paired with a certain tattooed guardian angel with a fear of heights. There’s roommate things happening, forced proximity, plus size heroine rep, and did I mention tattoos? And motorcycles.
- “Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz: This one made me giggle because the hero in this third installment is a guardian angel who has a fear of heights. The last thing he wants to do is fly away, but of course, that’s just what he has to do to help our heroine out of a jam.
- “I Put a Spell on You (Hocus Pocus Edition)”: I actually love all the editions of “I Put a Spell on You,” but this version will always one of my favorites. The movie is brought up a few times through all three books, and one fateful Halloween during the triplets’ youth, the sisters actually dressed up as the legendary sisters. To say it made an impression on them is probably an understatement, and if you’re interested on exactly what happened at that fateful Halloween party, the bonus content is up on my website.
