Song of the Week: “Don’t Call Me Up” by Mabel

Mabel is the pop sensation from the UK who’s has been tearing up the charts since about 2018. Her talent is obvious and part of that might be genetic, considering her mom is none other than 80s pop star Neneh Cherry. That’s not all. Her dad is Massive Attack record producer Cameron McVey. But don’t dare put her in the shadow of her parents, she is a powerful talent all on her own, there is no doubt about that.

Mabel’s breakup anthem might be just the help you need to finally ghost that broken relationship for good. Whether you need the reminder as to why you broke up, or want the solidarity from knowing you did the right thing, this track is worth hitting repeat a couple of times.

This fast-paced reggaetón trop-pop will have you booty shaking right out the door onto better things. With lyrics like “I’m over you and I don’t need your lies no more ‘Cause the truth is, without you, boy, I’m stronger” you would guess Mabel wrote this with a mountain of strength and assurance. As it turns out, she was still wrestling her emotions while she wrote it.  Mabel tells MTV News

“I wrote it for myself because that’s where I wanted to be. I was going through a breakup and I was like, I want to be the person that doesn’t care… And the song kind of helped me get there. [Through] listening to it, writing it, singing it, I did finally get to the point where I was like, ‘Yeah I’m over you.’”
