Song of the Week: “The Unicorn Song” by Rachel Lark

San Francisco Bay Area-based singer songwriter Rachel Lark has busy been serenading audiences around the country for much of the last decade, including at the sex-themed show Bawdy Storytelling. Lark’s songs explore a variety of sex-related topics, from the joys of period sex in “Warm, Bloody, and Tender” to”Naughty Bits,” responding to the SESTA law to a message “For the Guys” about sexual assault and consent, among others. Read our interview with Rachel Lark about her sex forward comedy musical Coming Soon.

With “The Unicorn Song,” Lark, whose Twitter bio reads, “I make music for freaks and weirdos that’s confrontational yet catchy,” sings from the point of view of a couple looking for a unicorn in a delightfully satirical way with lyrics such as:

And now we’re seeking

The unicorn of our dreams

But we haven’t really been impressed with what we’ve seen

Just regular people

Everywhere we viewed

And all the poly message boards have frankly been rude

They call us rookies

They call us naive I think they’re just jealous, they don’t like what they see

They don’t want us to have our

Unicorn unicorn unicorn

A unicorn all our own

While Lark herself identifies as a relationship anarchist, that doesn’t mean she can’t also gently make fun of those within the polyamory world who likely deserve the ribbing.

If you’re in the San Francisco area and want to catch more of her work, the musical Coming Soon, written and composed by Lark, opens April 22-30 at Z Space, and is described as “a boldly sex forward, brutally honest musical comedy.” Tickets are available here.
