Women from around the globe are gathering in Key West this week for Key West Womenfest, an annual celebration of strong women and pride that will count thousands of participants this year. The organizers call it “one of the largest gatherings of lesbians and friends in North America.”
Pool parties and an array of ocean cruises, each designed to fit your mood, is just for starters. There will also be snorkeling, flag football, poker for charity, and a variety of special themed buffets, dinners and dances. And of course there will be drag shows – one for the professionals and one for amateurs.
There could be no better place for a celebration of personal freedom than Key West – “close to perfect but far from normal.” From walking through Ernest Hemingway’s house (now a museum) where he wrote “For Whom the Bell Tolls” to mixing margaritas with oils on canvas to create your own artwork courtesy of Effusion Gallery and Mangoes Restaurant’s first annual Brushes ‘n’ Booze event (artist Chris Hotham will tutor you), this is the festival for memories to last a lifetime (or until your return next year).
